Why Is This Important?

Essentially, the Patriot Act gives the US Government free access to any data or information on any server or computer within the United States. There are many other remote backup providers out there but very few are Canadian and even fewer can guarantee that the United States Government (or any Government for that matter) will not be able to access your data. We certainly can. There is even rumour that allowing them access is a pre-requisite to providing backup services in the USA (Scary!). Couple that with how your data is encrypted and whether your service provider has access to your encryption key and you could be in violation of many Canadian laws through acts such as PIPEDA and Bill 198.

A Word Of Caution.

Be careful with whom you choose to partner with as the wrong choice could cause serious issues for your business should it become known that you are storing Canadian data on servers in the USA.
